9 Reasons We Need Your Weekly Dispatch Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
For the Worldbuilders Ep. 054
“Think. Never write without thinking. First think about how it might happen. Then think about what else might happen. Something else will always happen. That’s why you should only do small things. You can keep control better, writing a long ladder of little truths.”
— Octavia Butler, Mortal Words Fragment. Cited in Letters to the Future: Black Women/Radical Writing by Erica Hunt and Dawn Lundy Martin
Dear Worldbuilder,
It’s Thursday, the day For the Worldbuilders! Today we’re reflecting on why generations forward and back need your Weekly Dispatches and why you might need them too. In this week’s free Worldbuilding Workshop we talked about how our creative visions and worldbuilding desires can be so overwhelming we refrain from taking any action at all. Weekly Dispatches are one solution to this problem that visits many of us who dream at the scale of generational, world bending, time sculpting change.
In Today’s Episode
We explore 9 ways “writing a long ladder of little truths” through a series of weekly newsletters, podcasts, videos, etc. plays a powerful role in seeding, deepening and returning to a creative practice over time. This incremental approach to worldbuilding allows us to engage in public practice, develop and archive the ideas emerging in our research, all while receiving real time feedback from the folks we dream of our work serving.
Tune in to today’s episode to release all the unknowns inside your emerging world so you might share with us what you do know this week and next — trusting the transformative power of that little truth to seed unimaginable possibility. When we lean into our abundant curiosity, instead of our paralyzing overwhelm we give ourselves permission to start building where we are with what we have — trusting that long ladder to lead to exactly where we’re supposed to go.
This Week’s Invitation
Enrollment into the Treehouse is now open! The Treehouse is a monthly membership holding you accountable to weekly returns to your Zone of Desire through live workshops, open studios, guided meditations and black feminist worldbuilding tools. It’s $67 bucks a month to join and enrollment closes on Monday, July 29th!
Have some open questions before enrolling or just want to learn more? I hope you’ll join us and “Discover your Weekly Dispatch” this Thursday, July 25th at 12pm EST in the last free Treehouse Workshop I’ll be facilitating outside the membership for the year. If you missed the first workshop, register for PART 2 and receive the replay. Now that we've located your Zone of Desire in PART 1, we can use that data to discover your creative container for intuitive marketing and storytelling in PART 2. Whether that weekly container is a creative writing, podcast, video, social media live or wild card offering such as playlists, collages or code snippets, inside The Treehouse we will make sure it's informed by your deep desire, the only force more powerful than our fear. Inside this zone discipline melts into devotion and we pull the futures we desire into the present week, by week.
Octavia Butler reminds us “something else will always happen”. Let’s find out what wants unfold over time, together.
So be it, see to it, breathe through it,
Ayana
