Engage your sensorium.
Note something you can see, smell, hear, taste, touch, feel beyond the sense we have language for. Marvel at the fact that you have everything you need to begin in this exact moment.
Now note how you have everything you need to continue. Beginning is a moment, continuing is a practice.
I know the world as it is presented to us is a
place
space
idea
shape
because we insist on double dutching inside and outside it.
What else do I know?
I know the lights in my business flicker if I’m not fully engaged in my own creative project or practice. The lights flicker, not financially but energetically — a flicker that can be felt. There’s a cycle I know I can count on if I allow it. My art, my process and my methods teach me then I share what I have gathered from the well of my work and so forth and so on, but this regenerative cycle doesn’t have what it needs to complete itself if I’m not tending to the well. For some worldbuilders they view their business as their primary creative practice. That has never been the case for me. My business has always been the place where I present field reports after traversing the wilderness of my art, the wild landscape of my longing revealed in my writing.
Sometimes I’ll set my writing aside when the story takes an unanticipated turn or a character surprises me in ways I didn’t think they were capable of. It usually goes something like this: I set the story aside, the energetic light that I keep alive in my practice starts to dim and I begin to question the viability of my business. Then I pick the story back up, I use the erotic as power to keep the lights on in my business and its viability is inevitable once more.
What’s the regenerative cycle humming in the background of your practice? I have been doing this long enough to know the light returns as soon as we stop pretending to not know what we want. The light returns when we stop negotiating with our power and bargaining over the price of our desire.
The price is your daily “yes” and the light returns every time. In times like these when the weather is despair, the only thing left to do is worldbuild…finding shelter under the roof of our desire. For the time being, for every time after that. Please tell me what else is there to do? I’m listening. Your worldbuilding might look like a school, a local museum, a retreat center, a business, a healing campus, an institution or a garden we can all find shelter inside of as the old world thunders and falls.
Only you know the form your worldbuilding practice is longing to take and it serves no one to pretend that you don’t. For worldbuilding visions this large and desires this audacious, the first step is always saying “yes” to the creative practices that are for you first — whether it be writing, painting, music, fiber art or dancing — what relationship with movement or material reminds you of your power? We need you to say “yes” to that. It is from here we will use the erotic as a powerful strategy for building the next world1.
I used to say, “I don’t want to write for a living, I want a writing life”, but perhaps they are one in the same? My very first newsletter was titled “I Continue to Continue” inspired by the algorithm of Lucille Clifton’s poems. I continue to continue traversing the wilderness beyond the world as it was presented to me. We’re making it up on this bridge between starshine and clay and there’s no such thing as “good” or “bad”. We jumped the fences, we’re double dutching toward a world beyond that.
Engage your sensorium again. We’re beyond good.
Now we’re making a living out of telling everyone we know about this place. Our Zone of Desire. The sounds, the smells, the colors, the textures. Engaging our sensorium toward a world where we shape the material of reality like clay. “Artist” started to feel too commercial and “god” had been exhausted by history so I chose the word “worldbuilder” — a word that felt big enough but still had shape. And like the world as it was presented to us, we shaped it.
The next time someone tells you to be “realistic”. Ask them what reality they’re referring to. The one we’re creating or the one created for us?
Then continue to continue.

Feel free to share this flyer with a loved one you want to worldbuild with. 💌
I use the phrase “next world” instead of “new world” to side step the colonial choreography of dismissing all that came before.
